You receive a lot of information every day, through texts, emails, and social media accounts. Unfortunately, sometimes some of the messages you receive may be fraudulent. Scammers are out there, looking for personal and financial information. Sometimes they will impersonate police, registries or even the Government of Alberta. It’s important to stay vigilant and be careful.
Here are some things to remember:
- The Government of Alberta, the local police or RCMP, or Alberta registry agents do not send text messages for traffic fines, overdue payments, or registration refunds.
- Texts or emails that you receive from our Renewal Reminder Service will only be to remind you that your registration or driver’s license may be expiring soon. Texts or emails from the Automatic Renewal Service will notify you of an upcoming automatic renewal charge, a charge that has already been processed, or if your automatic renewal charge failed for some reason.
- Never click a link in a message if you’re unsure about whether or not the message has come from a reliable source.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre lists a wide variety of scams alphabetically and provides steps to follow if you think you have been scammed or want to report a possible fraudulent message.
