My car is a fully-electric vehicle (EV) – how does that affect my automatic renewal?
As of February, 2025, the Government of Alberta has implemented a $200 annual tax on battery electric vehicles (EV). This tax is collected every year when you renew your vehicle registration, so it will also be a part of your automatic registration renewal.
What is this tax for?
The tax is meant to replace the fuel tax that drivers of gas vehicles pay every time they fill up their vehicles. Because the fuel tax is generally used for road maintenance and other public services, the EV tax ensures that drivers of electric vehicles are also contributing for these services.
The EV tax is only applied to fully-electric vehicles, so plug-in hybrids are not affected.
What happens if my automatic renewal account charges me the regular rate for my electric vehicle, and does not include the EV tax?
When your registry agent processes your automatic renewal, if your vehicle registration shows that your vehicle is an EV, but you were not charged the EV tax, the registry will refund your automatic renewal charge, and advise you to renew your vehicle in person or online.
How do I make sure my Automatic Renewal account accurately reflects my EV?
- log into your account at autorenew.ca
- click Edit and choose Vehicles from the menu
- make sure to click the box at the bottom of your vehicle listing, confirming that the vehicle is fully electric. You must check the box for each vehicle on your account that is an EV.
- click Save
