I already renewed my vehicle in person at a registry – how can I stop my automatic renewal from going through?
The Automatic Renewal Service will always try to process your renewal payment on the first day of your renewal month, every year. The automatic renewal system is not linked to your personal registration information, so the service does not know if you have renewed your registration already or if you renewed for a two-year period last year.
If you need to stop your automatic renewal from happening this year, you can temporarily disable your account by deleting your credit card information. The system can’t charge you if there is no credit card number on file. To disable your account, you will need to follow these steps:
- log into your account at autorenew.ca
- click Edit and choose Payment from the menu that pops up
- delete all your credit card information by clicking the red Delete button beside it
- click Save
It is very important that you delete your card information with as many days before the first day of your renewal month as possible, to ensure that the changes you make to your account take effect before your payment date on the first day of your renewal month.
If a charge does go through when you did not want it to, you can request a refund from your registry agent. See also: How can I request a refund for an Automatic Renewal?
If you want to reactivate your account for next year’s automatic renewal, you will need to log back into your account and add your credit card information back to the account, before the first day of your renewal month next year. See also: Updating your Automatic Renewal Account
I want to receive reminders to renew but I want to renew my vehicles myself online or at a registry office – what are my options?
There are a couple ways you can use your account to remind you about your upcoming renewal dates, without having your registration renewed automatically:
- You can keep your Automatic Renewal Account active, but for renewal reminders only. If you delete your credit card information from your account, the system cannot charge you anything, but you will still receive reminder emails and/or texts from the service. The reminders may mention an upcoming charge, but because your account would be disabled, you would be responsible for renewing your registration yourself, using one of the online renewal services available, or in person at a registry office.
- You can switch to a Renewal Reminder Account. This account sends email and/or text reminders to you every year, but has no ability to charge your credit card or process your renewal automatically. To switch your account, you would first need to delete your Automatic Renewal account.
Once you’ve cancelled your Automatic Renewal Account your email address will be free to use to sign up for your Renewal Reminder Account. See also: How do I get started?
I want to cancel my Automatic Renewal Account
The time has come for you to part ways with the Automatic Renewal Service.
Have you moved out of Alberta? The automatic renewal service can only work with Alberta registry agents, so if you and your vehicle are no longer Alberta residents, your Automatic Renewal Account will no longer be useful to you.
Have you sold your vehicle? If you’re between vehicles, you don’t necessarily have to delete your automatic renewal account – you could disable it by removing credit card information, which would keep your account in existence until you are ready to add a new vehicle to it. But if you don’t have immediate plans to purchase a new vehicle, or if you just don’t feel the automatic renewal service is right for you anymore, you can certainly delete your account.
