When does my vehicle registration expire every year?
Vehicle registrations always expire at the end of a particular month. The expiry month for your vehicle is based on the spelling of the last name of the person who the vehicle is registered to.
If your last name starts with: Your vehicle registration expires in:
A, I, J, Ke, U, X, number 0-9 January
M, Q February
B, Y March
D, G April
C, N May
Cl, H, Sc June
Av, Be, L, Sz, V, Z July
E. Gr, R August
F, Po, T September
S October
K, P November
Me, O, W December
Typically, your registration will come due every year, but it is possible to renew your registration at a registry office for more than one year at a time. It is up to you to remember to check your current vehicle registration certificate and to know if your registration is due for renewal this year.
When are reminders sent?
For vehicle registrations and corporate annual returns, your reminder notices will be sent out two times per year:
- on the 15th of the month prior to your renewal month
- on the first day of your renewal month
Because vehicle registrations expire on the last day of the renewal month, this gives you plenty of time to make sure your registration is renewed.
Driver’s licenses typically expire on your birthday, and the year can vary based on how many years your license was last renewed for. Reminders are sent in the middle of the month prior to the month of expiry, and again on the first of that month. Always check your license card to be sure of the expiration year.
What do the reminders look like?
Your reminder email and text will begin with the notice that “Vehicles registrations for last names beginning with ___ are expiring in ______.”
The reminder will also contain the name and contact information for your registry of choice.
If the registry offers an online renewal option, there will be a link to click to take you to that service.
There will be an option to cancel or unsubscribe from the reminders.
What can you do with the reminder?
You’ve gotten the nudge to remember to renew your vehicle registration, license or corporate annual return—what now?
If your registry of choice offers online vehicle registration service, your reminder will contain a link you can click to go right to that service.
Otherwise, the text or email is your reminder to visit your local registry agent to do the renewal.
Even though you choose a registry agent when you set up your account, you do not have to visit or renew with that registry agent. You are welcome to visit any of the 200+ registry offices in Alberta.
