Can I renew my registration for more than one year at a time?
The Alberta eServices website can only renew a vehicle for one year, per transaction. You can go back and renew your vehicle additional times if you want to—each renewal will extend your renewal by another year. This is not the same as renewing for a two-year period in person at a registry, though, because on the eServices site every time you renew your registration you pay the full service fees (there is no discount for renewing additional years).
Handy tip: If you do renew more than once on the eService website, make sure you download and print the most recent registration certificate, showing the latest expiry date.
My renewal transaction didn’t go through!
If you’ve made an error entering your vehicle or payment information, the system usually flags those errors in red.
Handy tip: Make sure that you’ve provided your credit card’s expiry date and three-digit CVD code from the back of your card to avoid issues with your payment transaction.
Other than payment or data issues, there are a number of reasons why an online transaction may not be completed:
- If your vehicle registration has been expired for more than 12 months
- If you made changes to your registration information (for example, you changed your name or address) within the last 12 months
- If you have any outstanding fines
- Your vehicle is a fleet or company vehicle (these cannot be renewed on the eServices site)
If any of these situations apply to you, please visit a registry agent to complete your registration renewal.
Sometimes the government system flags a registration for another, undisclosed reason. Please visit a registry agent to update your registration information and renew your vehicle registration.
The eServices site says I need to verify my account – what does this mean?
To make sure that your Alberta.ca account is accurate and current, you need to verify the account every year. If you try to log in to start the registration renewal process, and receive a message to verify your account, you can:
- Click the link to start the steps to verify your account (if you see a link to click)
Or
- Visit the Alberta.ca website to follow the steps to verify your account
The Alberta eServices site says I can’t renew online and must visit a registry – what does this mean?
Sometimes online transactions just won’t work.
If the government system has flagged your registration for some reason you will receive a message telling you to visit a registry agent. Unfortunately, there is no way to force the online renewal through, and in this instance you will need to visit a registry agent to update your registration information and renew your vehicle registration.
Can I cancel my online renewal?
Because the Alberta eServices renewal results in an instant, digital registry product (your registration, abstract, etc) your order cannot be cancelled. The government cannot take back the digital registration certificate you received.
If you renewed your vehicle registration and didn’t need to, please visit a registry agent to cancel the registration. The registry agent can provide a pro-rated refund for unused time on a cancelled registration (you may not receive a refund of the service fees though).
If you ordered the wrong driver’s abstract or other registry product, you will need to re-order.
I renewed my registration twice by mistake! What can I do?
The Alberta eServices system is not set up to notice if your registration has already been renewed for the year. If you renew a registration that has already been renewed, the system will add another year to your registration and extend your expiry date. You have a couple of options if this happens:
- You can leave things as they are and remember not to renew your registration next year. Make sure you print the most current digital registration certificate (from the second renewal) to make sure you have the most up-to-date expiry date!
- You can visit a registry agent, cancel your entire vehicle registration, and re-register. You will receive a refund or credit for unused time when you cancel a registration. Please note that you will likely not receive a refund of the service fees.
Can I get a refund on my eServices online renewal?
Because the eServices renewal results in an instant, digital registry product (your registration, abstract, etc) your order cannot be cancelled. The government cannot take back the digital registration certificate you received. Therefore, the fees from your online renewal cannot be refunded.
As a part of the online renewal process, the system provides a box you must check to confirm you are aware of the no-refund policy.
If you visit a registry to cancel your registration, you can receive a pro-rated refund or credit for unused time on your registration.
